Conference in Los Angeles for the development of Spa Tourism

(Los Angeles, USA, June 2018)

With the participation of leading stakeholders from the fields of health, tourism and business of Greece and America, an event for health tourism for our country took place in Los Angeles.

The conference was organized by the International Health Tourism Center and the Global Doctors' Hippocratic Institute, under the auspices of the Athens Medical Association, at the Huffington Center, in Los Angeles, USA.

This is the sixth stop, after New York and Chicago in USA, Montreal in Canada, Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, where similar events were held with great success.

The distinguished speakers referred to the competitive advantages of Greece, which can play a leading role in the world map of health tourism. According to the data presented, our country has 60% -90% lower health care costs and shorter waiting lists compared to other countries.

The Greek government was represented by the Secretary General of Tourism Policy and Development Mr. George Tziallas, while the Consul General of Greece Mr. Grigoris Karachalios addressed a greeting. In his statement, Mr. Tziallas stated among other things: "Greece attracts more than 32 million tourists, many of whom go to rising tourist destinations, such as the Peloponnese region, while special emphasis should be given to health and wellness tourism and the utilization of thermal springs of our country. In fact, 25 million euros have been committed, which are called to use by the Municipalities that have certified thermal springs, to do infrastructure projects ".

From his part, Mr. G. Patoulis, in his speech, emphasized: "Our goal is to make Greece a top destination on the world map of health tourism. Our country has significant advantages, such as the high level of health services, the renowned scientific staff and the wealth of our thermal springs, in combination with the excellent hotel infrastructure. The global health-tourism tourism market is estimated to exceed 100 billion dollars, with a growth rate of 15% -25%, with approximately 35 million cross-border healthcare users spending an average of 3,800-6,000 dollars per medical visit, including costs related to medical services, cross-border and local travel, inpatient stay and accommodation. The creation of a strong brand and reputation of Greece, as an attractive medical tourism destination is crucial for the success of the national strategy. We work systematically in this direction, both with our interventions in the central administration at home, and with presentations of the possibilities of our country abroad. We must join forces to open communication channels to establish collaborations in order to achieve our goal ".

Then, prominent members of the scientific community made statements about the high level of health services provided in Greece and the possibilities that can be used by the citizens of other countries. It was very touching to hear the intervention of couples, who visited our country for assisted reproduction and expressed their gratitude to Greek scientists.
